The ancient Greeks claimed that topaz gave them strength, the Europeans thought it could thwart magic spells and dispel anger back in the 1300s, and it’s long been worn in India to enhance beauty, brains and longevity. Some believe the word ‘topaz’ derived from the Sanskrit word tapas (meaning ‘fire’), whilst others trace it back to the Greek topazos.Įither way, topaz is thought to have plentiful benefits to those who wear it. ![]() I’ve suffered from anxiety and depression for as long as I can remember, so my list was informed by decades of surviving black moods and big sads. ![]() Every day, I pledged, I would eat one meal of raw fruits and vegetables, meditate for at least a few minutes, practice 15 minutes of yoga, take the dogs for a walk, read a book with my daughter, and clean a nebulously identified “something” (this is the box that missed the most ticks). To combat this feeling of sudden loss and the rising swell of dread, I downloaded an app that let me create a daily checklist for the things I deemed essential. Every day, we were at home, a never-ending weekend with never-ending chores. My husband was no longer leaving the house to teach and my daughter was no longer able to attend daycare. My yoga studio-where I spent hours every Monday, Thursday, and Sunday-had closed down. All of my usual markers of time had gone. The funeral stands out like a glint of metal in the sand, unexpected treasure.Īt the beginning of the pandemic, I focused on creating daily rituals and healthy habits. I do remember when my daughter took her first steps-June, I think?-and I remember the day I went for my first swim of the season-April, it was terribly cold-but other than that, my hindsight is fogged, blurred by repetition. I remember there was snow early on, but was it March or April, I couldn’t tell you. The rise and fall rhythms of workweek and weekend, on hours and off, sunlit and moonlit, have all blurred together into a stream of sameness. When I look back on this year, it’s amazing how much the days bleed together. So many people weren’t afforded this melancholy joy, so many people had to go without.įor the past 10 months, I’ve been following the suggested pandemic protocol and spending my time away from family and friends. We were happy to be with each other, grateful to have this day together, to be able to bury my grandmother next to her husband, to be able to stand under the maples and oaks and to say goodbye. For the most part, we weren’t terribly sad. Few people cried, though there were some misted glasses. But instead of huddled groups, we were spread out awkwardly, our chapped hands shoved in pockets and our faces obscured with fabric masks. It looked like something from a film, quiet and somber. The cemetery was golden, green, and gray-the colors of October in Massachusetts-and the mourners were dressed in black. ![]() You’ll know it’s time to move your sunflowers if they start to yellow before turning brown. Observing them intently over a few weeks is a straightforward method to tell. How can you determine if you need to relocate your sunflowers to a more shaded area? The sunflowers, though, will start to turn brown if you set the plants in direct sunlight. Sunflower leaves will remain green if you keep your plants in the shade. How Can I Stop Sunflower Leaves From Browning? On the other side, extreme heat and sunlight also have adverse effects. You will need intense lighting that can substitute natural sunshine as much as possible if growing indoors. Sunlight is the thing that sunflowers require the most. You might also use a fan or an air conditioner to lessen the heat indoors. To shield the plants from the sun’s harsh rays, use a green shade net or comparable. Even in temperatures as high as 30☌, they will continue to grow, but beyond that, they will start to wilt. However, it only functions when the temperatures are appropriate. Excessive HeatĬertainly, sunflowers enjoy the sun. While it keeps producing too many leaves, it can stop the plant from developing blooms. Having said that, too much nitrogen is harmful as well. The plant begins to deteriorate as its leaves turn yellow. The stems can’t grow robust because of a lack of nitrogen. The leaves appear green and healthy, thanks to nitrogen. Nitrogen is likely the most crucial nutrient among the many others needed. However, anytime there is an excess or shortage of nutrients, plants start to struggle, much like we humans do. Nutrient imbalanceįor growth, all plants require nutrients. However, you could submerge if you go on vacation and completely disregard the plants. This is due to their low water requirements. It is really uncommon to drown your sunflowers. Your sunflowers will appreciate you for watering just when the topsoil is dry. So it makes sense to regularly give them a deep watering, but giving them too much water every day will kill them. They are sensitive to root rot and can’t tolerate too much water. Because they believe the plants will thrive better with a bit of additional care, beginners harm plants by overwatering them. Overwatering is the most frequent cause of plant death, while others are. Here are a few typical issues that may be affecting your sunflowers: Overwatering and Underwatering But you might need to step in if you see the plants drooping and dying for no apparent cause. Sunflowers typically recover from setbacks faster than you might anticipate. Alternatively, the blossoms might begin to change hues. Your sunflower plants’ leaves could start falling off for no apparent cause. However, occasionally you could encounter problems. Sunflowers are easy to maintain for novices because they require little upkeep. Also looking withered and dry are new plants. Sunflowers are attacked by soil-dwelling fungi, which spread upward and produce dark brown patches on the plant’s stem and leaves. New plants are vulnerable to fungal withering without enough water. Alternatively, there might be an issue with the fertilizer you’re applying.Īlso, sunflowers are a plant that enjoys wetness. They might be slightly more sensitive than plants growing outside if they are grown indoors under artificial lighting. Where you are growing them is another factor. It’s crucial to pinpoint the issue before treating your plants. The bill requires cyber charters to provide 180 days or a required number of hours (900 for elementary, 990 for high school) per year, just like any public school. Probably with an eye on Oklahoma’s Catholic cyber charter, the bill explicitly forbids religious instruction and requires that the school will be “nonsectarian in all operations.” Education Voters of PA has determined that cyber charters spent a grand total of $52 million of taxpayer funds on marketing over just three years. The Democratic House Caucus estimates that the new payment system would send $455 million back to public school districts.īut beyond the issues of money, the bill also creates more accountability and transparency in cyber charter operation, bringing them in line with the rules governing public schools.Ĭyber charters may not advertise themselves as “free,” but must acknowledge that costs are “covered by taxpayer dollars.” Also, a cyber charter won’t be allowed to sponsor a public event, which is perhaps a reaction to Commonwealth Charter Academy’s sponsorship of a float for the 6abc Dunkin’ Donuts Thanksgiving Day Parade, part of a larger pattern of cyber charter marketing by sponsoring community events. Under the bill, cyber charters would be paid using the same method of tiers used by public schools. Charter schools get a single high tuition payment for all students with special needs, even if the student’s needs are a simple as one hour a week with a speech therapist. ![]() It also closes a longstanding loophole for special ed students Pennsylvania public schools fund students with special needs based on separate tiers of spending levels based on the student’s needs. Instead of a tuition rate can currently vary from $9,000 to $22,000 per student, the bill sets a standard rate of $8,000 per “regular” student. The marquee item is the creation of a single tuition cost for all districts in the state. HB 1422 passed the House last week, with yes votes from all Democrats and 20 Republicans, a sign that many local districts, particularly poor ones, are hit hard by cyber charter costs, and that conservatives can share concerns about unaccountable spending of taxpayer dollars. Now that reform could be coming over the horizon. Given that we can provide the exact same cyber learning experience as the Insight PA Cyber Charter School for just $3,000 per student, I believe that the current cyber school funding scheme is an unjustified waste of taxpayers’ hard-earned money.” For special education students, the cost rises to $23,587 per student. I also want to point out that if a regular education student enrolls in Insight PA Cyber Charter School, our taxpayers are billed a mandated $13,118 per student. Scientists hypothesise that a small, wayward moon like one of these disintegrated 200 million years ago to form Saturn’s ring system. While observing the planet Hubble also managed to capture images of six of Saturn’s 62 currently known moons: Dione, Enceladus, Tethys, Janus, Epimetheus, and Mimas. To the south of this feature a string of bright clouds is visible: remnants of a disintegrating storm. Though all of the gas giants boast rings, Saturn’s are the largest and most spectacular, stretching out to eight times the radius of the planet.Īlongside a beautiful view of the ring system, Hubble’s new image reveals a hexagonal pattern around the north pole - a stable and persistent wind feature discovered during the flyby of the Voyager 1 space probe in 1981. The taken images show Saturn’s magnificent ring system near its maximum tilt toward Earth, allowing a spectacular view of the rings and the gaps between them. At this time Saturn was approximately 1.4 billion kilometres from Earth. Ī month before Saturn’s opposition - on 6 June - Hubble was used to observe the ringed planet. During an opposition, a planet is fully lit by the Sun as seen from Earth, and it also marks the time when the planet is closest to Earth, allowing astronomers to see features on the planet’s surface in greater detail. An opposition occurs when the Sun, Earth and an outer planet are lined up, with Earth sitting in between the Sun and the outer planet. In the last months the planets Mars and Saturn have each been in opposition to Earth - Saturn on 27 June and Mars on 27 July. However, Hubble has one advantage over space probes: it can look at these objects periodically and observe them over much longer periods than any passing probe could. Hubble’s high-resolution images of our planetary neighbours can only be surpassed by pictures taken from spacecraft that actually visit these bodies. Since the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope was launched, its goal has always been to study not only distant astronomical objects, but also the planets within our Solar System. ![]() Hubble took advantage of this preferred configuration and imaged both planets to continue its long-standing observation of the outer planets in the Solar System. ![]() During this event the planets are relatively close to Earth, allowing astronomers to observe them in greater detail. Universal Plug and Play (uPnP) can be enabled to allow Plex to "talk" with the router and have ports and routes opened up for access from the outside world.
